Definition of Syntax

Syntax is set of Principles, the rules, and process that control the structure of sentences.

Commonly, including word order.

 

Two techniques to analyze the sentence in syntax

1. Chinese Boxes

            Chinese boxes are on of technique for analizing syntax. It contains several boxes of various sizes to analyze the syntax components of a sentence.

2. Tree Diagram

            The tree diagram is a newer method for diagramming sentences that is most commonly used by linguists and other academic professionals.

In a tree diagram, a sentence is divided into two parts: a subject and a predicate. They are made up of noun phrases or verb phrases.

 

The benefits of using the syntax tree diagram

It is a very good visual tool for analysis or problem-solving, also helps us for systematic analysis of any problem.

 

Components of Tree Diagram

S = Sentence

VP = Verb Phrase

PP = Preposition Phrase

NP = Noun Phrase

DET = Determiner

N = Noun

P = Preposition

Art = Article

 

 

Relationship of Morphology and Syntax

·         Morphology is concerned with the ways in which words are formed in the languages of the world. Syntax, in contrast, is concerned with identifying the rules that allow us to combine words into phrase and phrases into sentences.

·         We know that inflectional morphology is defined as morphology that carries grammatical meaning; as such it is relevant to syntatic processes. Case-marking, for example, serves to identify the syntatic function of an NP in a sentence.

 

Word Order

Definition of word order is the order or arrangement of words in a phrase, clause, or sentence. The standard word order in English is: Subject + Verb + Object.

 

Preposition Phrase

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that consists of a preposition, its object (which will be a noun or a pronoun), and any words that modify the object.
